Cave Runner is a game that I created over the span of 3 weeks in order to experiment and learn new things that could be done in Unreal Engine. It was my first full solo Unreal project and was also used as a test o what a game that I created could look like. The game only lasts about 2 minutes and has the player perform parkour puzzles to reach the end
As the sole worker on this project, I had to create everything from scratch (outside of the assets from the asset store). I gave the Player a double jump and a stamina system, with wall running and and inventory system. I learned a lot with the event system to help sequence the events and I feel that this project was a very good “limit test” for what I could do with 3 weeks.
In these blueprints, there are a lot of variables to control which walls you can run on, how cast it slows your velocity, as well as how far you go from when you jump off the wall. This was integrated with the stamina system to restrict the ability to wall run infinitely since preserving your stamina is required for one of the puzzles.
This project was extremely beneficial to me as a programmer as it let me learn the entire process behind Unreal Blueprints and helped teach me practices and concepts within Unreal which I still follow to this day. It was my first introduction into inventory systems as well as save states through checkpoints and I was proud of being able to figure out how to wall run.
